Nithyaharitha Nayakan Movie Review

Review: Ask five people what they think of total honesty in relationships and one thing that’s guaranteed is more opinions than three. But a common advice that might follow is, ‘If you want to be honest about everything pre-marital, be ready to embrace the consequences too. And they might not always be pretty.’

Nithyaharitha Nayakan is the story of a common man named Sajimon (Vishnu), and his romantic pre-marital escapades. The movie also throws in a thought on whether one can expect millennials to respect relationships.

Vividly evoking bittersweet memories that every Malayali can have from the school and college days, almost 80% of the film’s first half is captivating. One can easily see through the makers’ efforts to keep the audience glued to screen through some tried and tested nostalgic connect. Even then, those portions in which the school days of Sajimon and his friend Joby (Basil Joseph) are shown, taking the story ahead as they relish those colourful ice candies, watching Shaktiman on neighbourhood TV, apply turmeric on face to lighten skin and play on paala vandi are cute and winsome. In fact, they are some of the most enjoyable portions of the film, which moves on to serious turfs from there on.

As it gets serious, the film starts to falter too. Not only do the romantic plotlines get predictable, some badly choreographed songs are also squeezed in to them. The actors are evidently giving all their energy to make the songs look decent but it hardly helps. A handful of school sequences are extremely similar to the ones in movies like Idukki Gold as well. The way the final chunk of flashback and climax are connected are also a tad juvenile.

Nithyaharitha Nayakan might have had many things zestful on paper, but they don’t build well and it is a little too bloated with the run time of 155 minutes.
